arek Miszczyk is a senior software engineer at the ISV Enablement organization in Rochester, Minnesota. His mission is to provide consulting services to independent software vendors (ISVs), large IBM clients and other IBM organizations on issues related to DB2 for i5/OS. Before joining the ISV Enablement organization in 2000, he worked for several years at the IBM International Technical Support Organization (ITSO), also in Rochester, Minnesota, where he was the leading author of several popular IBM Redbooks® on databases. Jarek holds a Master’s degree in computer science and has almost 20 years of experience in the computer field. His areas of expertise include cross-platform database programming, database-performance tuning and database integration with emerging technologies (such as XML, Java and Microsoft .NET).

2008 Announcement – the Details

2008 has been a very busy year for IBM i and Power Systems. Version 6.1 was announced in January and delivered in March. April saw the announcement of a single hardware platform for running AIX, i and Linux. This presentation will provide the details behind all of these announcements.

Alison works on the Power Systems Software Team which has responsibility for all of the various software product offerings for IBM i. Her responsibilities include Application Development Offerings and other IBM i functional areas. Alison is an IBM Certified Consulting I/T Specialist; certified in Application Development, WebSphere and System i. In her present position, Alison is working with a variety of teams to develop strategic direction and offerings for developers on the IBM i. Having worked in the mid-range area for more than 25 years, Alison has held a wide variety of positions at IBM, primarily with midrange servers and software. She has held a range of positions including field Systems Engineer, an instructor in Customer Technical Education, national support representative for IBM Canada, and Worldwide Technical Marketing support representative for the development tools and compilers from the IBM Toronto Laboratory. Alison is a regular speaker at user groups, technical conferences, COMMON events and IBM customers in many countries around the world. She holds numerous Speaker Excellence medals from COMMON North America.

Integrated Web application server for IBM I

The IBM i integrated Web application server introduces a Web-servlet container into IBM i. This Web container includes the basics for getting Servlet and JSP applications up and running quickly and effectively on the Web. The integrated Web application server is a good place to prototype new applications or to run existing small-footprint or low-use applications. You can consider the integrated Web application server as an entry point to the Web. Administration is easy and straight forward using the Web Administration for i graphical user interface (GUI). Since this Web container is part of the operating system, there are no additional products to install and maintenance is handled via PTFs. Learn how this friendly Web container can quickly and easily get you started on the road to the Web.

Application development update

Application Development for IBM i has had some significant changes and enhancements in 2008. There is a new Web Application Server that is integrated with IBM i. There are new enhancements to RPG and COBOL as well as the tools used to write the code. PHP and mySQL continues their rise in popularity for i. And Rational has introduced the i world to many new products for testing, source control, etc. This session will present more details on all of these announcements.
