It is certainly true that the energy use in IT is getting a lot of media attention today. It is estimated that almost 2% of the world’s electricity production is used in IT, resulting in a carbon dioxide emission equivalent to the global air traffic. Recent studies in de USA also show that the datacenters are the fastest growing consumers of electrical energy. Usage in the US alone has grown from 30 billion kWh in the year 2000 to 60 billion kWh in 2005 and is projected to reach 110 billion kWh in the year 2010. Electricity is currently the second largest factor, after management, in the total cost of operating an IT infrastructure. There is no reason to believe that the situation in Europe is radically different from the US. In fact, very much like the USA, both European and national level politics have taken an interest in the energy use of IT equipment, publishing reports and preparing legislation to curb the growth. In the light of upcoming legislation and the global discussion about energy use, CO2 emission and climate changes, I would like to use this presentation to discuss, what is driving this growth and what, if anything can and is being done about it. The presentation will give a high level view of the entire IT production to operations chain. Energy plays a role, from the nano-scale region of transistors to the operational challenges of a large datacenter and the role of this electrical load in the electricity production and distribution network. The presentation will show that improvements cannot only come from the manufacturers, but also requires energy awareness from operators and users. A technology deepdive In the light of the current rise in attention for energy consumption in IT, this presentation will go into the various aspects of the POWER platform that have relations with this topic. We will show the various energy efficiency enhancements that were started with the introduction of P5 and AIX5.2 and have been further enhanced with the release of the POWER 6 platform. Specific topics we will discuss include: Simultaneous Multithreading, selective clockgating, energyscale technology and Active energy manager. Deze gratis software (bij de iSeries) wordt bijna altijd terzijde gelegd terwijl het een onmisbare tool kan zijn in uw IT omgeving. In zijn sessie gaat Rene dieper in op de vraag “Waarom” en “En wat kan ik er mee”. Spreker: Rene Veltman, IBM Sinds 1977 in dienst bij IBM. Begonnen als engineer op de MC82 composer (eerste elektronische schrijfmachine met proportioneel schrift). Vanaf 1980 werkzaam als JCL programmeur en daarna als systeem analist op het mainframe. In 1982 aangevuld met de specialisatie Automated Operations (automated operators op de eerste PC's) en daarna als consultant automation projects op het mainframe. Daarna werkzaam als project manager bij IBM Network Services. Vanaf 1990 consultant Intel servers, complexe netwerken en systems management. Vanaf 1998 product manager IntelliStation werkstations en vanaf 2001 Product manager IBM p Series. In 2007 is daar de ambassadeurs functie voor het Linux Platform bij gekomen. In zijn vrije tijd mag Rene graag door zijn telescoop de hemel afspeuren naar sterrenstelsels en planeten. Mocht het weer dit niet toelaten dan is een lekkere Italiaanse maaltijd met een mooie Italiaanse wijn een prima alternatief.
